If you need to cancel, cut short or delay your holiday for certain reasons outside your control, you could reclaim the cost. You won’t be covered if you knew that you might need to cancel or cut short your trip, for example because you were already unwell.

Lost, stolen or damaged possessions

I’m a kiwi buying travel insurance, what should I know? 

Travel insurance for kiwis is there to help cover unexpected costs that would otherwise put you out of pocket – medical costs can be very high in some countries so it’s important to have suitable cover for that.

It’ll usually include cover for things like:

  • Emergency medical expenses
  • Cancelling or cutting your trip short
  • Lost luggage
  • Flight delays
  • Personal liability claims

And there are two main types of policy you can get:

  • single trip
  • annual multi-trip

You can also choose policies tailored for your type of trip, including cruise travel insurance, winter sports or Ski travel insurance.

Travelling with serious pre-existing medical conditions

Most travel insurance companies will offer some cover for delayed outbound or inbound journeys, however the requirements for the length of the delay and what compensation is available may differ. Make sure you read your policy so you know what you’re covered for.

I'm going overseas for over a year, will you cover me?

In most cases yes, we can. We work with insurers who offer Insurance policies allowing you to stay away for a maximum of 24 months (under two 12-month policies). There are tighter restrictions on durations for some destinations and age groups. In particular, if you are travelling to the Americas or Africa, we can only offer cover up to 18 months.

Will you cover me for a one-way trip?

In most cases, yes. We may be able to cover you for up to 12 months. Compare with us and once you have found your provider ask them.

Can I get travel insurance if I have an existing medical condition?

Yes! We work with many companies that offer Insurance policies automatically cover some existing medical conditions.
